          Description

Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.

A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, bullion and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - typically, one ounce of silver (abbreviated as 1 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum).

This coin honours Her Majesty, the late Queen Elizabeth II with a design that features all five of the Queen’s definitive portraits featured on the coins that circulated across the United Kingdom. These five portraits chronicle the life of the beloved monarch from her ascension as a young queen just 25 years old to her final years on the throne that ended with the world celebrating her Platinum Jubilee marking her 70 years on the throne.

          Obverse

The obverse of the coin shows the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits.

In small letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).

Around the effigy is the monarch's legend, the date of issue and the value: NIUE 2022 2.50 Dollars ELIZABETH II Ag .999 1oz.

The inscription also includes the precious metal content; Ag .999 1oz means "one troy ounce of 99.9% silver" - "Ag" is abbreviated from Argentum, the Latin word for silver.

The reverse shows each of the five definitive portraits of Queen Elizabeth II which have been used on regular coinage of the United Kingdom, creating a time-line effect - with the most recent portrait of the Queen on the left, in a line receding to her youngest portrait on the right. Below each portrait there is the date of its release in the UK.

From left to right, these are:
Fifth Portrait by Jody Clark - 2015,
          Fourth Portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley - 1998,
Third Portrait by Raphael David Maklouf - 1985,
Second Portrait by Arnold Machin - 1968, and
First Portrait by Mary Gillick - 1953.
(The Machin portrait was used in Canada since 1965, and in Australia, the Bahamas and New Zealand since 1967.)

Above the portraits, the Crown of Saint Edward. Below the portraits, an English rose.

Around left, the inscription HER MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZABETH II; around right, the dates of her reign: 6 February 1952 - 8 September 2022.
