Australian iconic animals

Five designs in the series consist of Kangaroo - is the iconic creature’s strong hind legs and long tail are brilliantly designed to hop great distances. Koala - is a tree dwelling creature believed to get its name from the Indigenous words, meaning ‘no drink’. This is because the koala sources its hydration from a specific variety of eucalyptus leaves and is only seen to drink in drought situations or when ill. Emu - is a large flightless bird recognised by its long neck, brown drooping feathers, pointed beak and large bright eyes.  Kookaburra - is the world's largest kingfisher. It is recognised by its plumage in shades of white and brown. Platypus - is a mammal and monotreme recognised by its soft rubbery bill, thick insulating fur coat, and webbed feet.

Each coin features an artistic representation of the Discover Australia animal series. The Kangaroo coin's reverse depicts a kangaroo set against a coloured outback scene incorporating wild spring grasses and Australian boab trees.
