          Mexico – 2000 – 1 Onza – Libertad – Gold – Uncirculated – Key Date

This 1-ounce gold Libertad coin from the year 2000 marks a significant turning point in modern Mexican gold coinage, as it saw the return of the 1-oz issue in Brilliant Uncirculated condition after a hiatus of several years. This makes 2000 a numismatically important key date for the series and particularly prized by discerning collectors who are specifically building their collections of the early modern gold Libertads. The mintage of the 1-ounce version was a mere 2,730 pieces worldwide, which is why this issue is now extremely rare on the market and correspondingly scarce.

Furthermore, no further 1-oz gold coins in proof condition immediately followed this issue, and regular issues did not reappear until 2002. Proof editions of the 1-oz gold Libertad were also not introduced until years later. As a result, the 2000 vintage occupies a special position in the development of modern gold Libertads and is increasingly recognized as an important reference date for the early years of the 2000 series.

The obverse of the coin depicts the winged goddess of victory in front of the volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, while the reverse features the Mexican coat of arms in the center and historical variations of the coat of arms in a circle. This creates a striking and culturally significant image composition that has a special appeal both aesthetically and for collectors.

The coin is made of 999 fine gold and has a fine weight of 1 ounce. It is in untreated and uncirculated condition; however, both sides exhibit typical reddish spots in the fields, which can occasionally occur in gold alloys of this type. The surface is generally brilliant and highly detailed, so the overall appearance remains very appealing despite the spots. The photos shown depict the actual condition of the coin offered here.

At the same time, it is planned to send this example to PCGS for evaluation and professional conservation. Depending on the achieved state of preservation and any potential visual improvement through professional treatment, a significant increase in value is possible, which is why a corresponding upward adjustment of the asking price is to be expected in the future. Therefore, the current condition of the coin presents an interesting opportunity for collectors who wish to secure this rare key date of the modern 1-oz gold Libertad at an early stage.

Furthermore, this issue is an excellent, high-quality addition to discerning Libertad collections, particularly in the context of the early years of the 2000 series. The combination of its low mintage, historical transitional period, and collector’s value underscores the special market position of this coin and makes it a remarkable piece of modern Mexican numismatics.
